KUALA LUMPUR — Datuk Mohd Joehari Mohd Ayub is poised to assume the presidency of the Football Association of Malaysia (FAM), following confirmation that he is the sole eligible candidate for the role.
This positions him as the successor to Tan Sri Hamidin Mohd Amin, with the official announcement expected at the 61st FAM Congress on February 15.
This development aligns with Scoop’s previous report on January 3, where a source within FAM revealed that Joehari had emerged as the frontrunner for the presidency, thanks to his strong relationships with FAM affiliates and extensive experience in football administration.
FAM Election Committee chairman Professor Datuk Abdullah Mohamad Said also confirmed the news in a statement today, highlighting that all nomination processes had been carried out according to FAM’s statutes.
“Out of 39 nominations received, 29 candidates met the eligibility requirements for various positions. These include the presidency, deputy presidency, vice presidency, and executive committee (exco) seats for the 2025-2029 term,” he said.
“To contest the position of president, a candidate must secure at least six nominations from FAM’s affiliate members, while the deputy president role requires five nominations, the vice president position requires four nominations, and the exco post requires two nominations.”
Joehari, also the current vice president, fulfilled the criteria, solidifying his path to the presidency.
The deputy presidency will also see continuity, as Datuk Mohd Yusoff Mahadi and Datuk S. Sivasundaram are set to retain their roles unopposed.
Both secured sufficient nominations and will be officially declared winners during the congress.
The election process will now focus on contested positions for vice-presidents and exco members, with 17 seats up for grabs.
Abdullah highlighted that the nomination process adhered strictly to deadlines and integrity checks, including screenings by the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM), the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC), and the Insolvency Department.
“The final list of candidates will be released by February 8, seven days before the congress,” he explained, adding that two seats in the exco have been allocated for women candidates. — January 17, 2025
