KUALA LUMPUR – Malaysian mixed doubles shuttler Tan Kian Meng has firmly denied any involvement in match-fixing.
Although the origins of these rumours are unclear, the former Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) player who partners Lai Pei Jing, addressed the matter on social media last night to clear his name.
“Hi everyone, I want to clarify that I am clean. I have never been involved in match-fixing at any point in my badminton career,” Tan posted in an Instagram story.
“If anyone has heard rumours about me, please understand that they are untrue.”
Kian Meng further emphasised his dedication, adding, “I play badminton because I love the sport. I play for my family, my wife, my country, and my career. That’s all – thank you for the support.”
Prior to Kian Meng’s post, Pei Jing had announced on social media that the pair would be withdrawing from the upcoming Kumamoto Masters, scheduled for 12 to 17 November due to an injury her partner recently sustained.
She added that they plan to return to competitive action at the China Masters from November 19 to 24.
Speculation has been mounting among fans about potential strain within the partnership, fuelled by several cryptic posts from Pei Jing on social media.
It also does not help that Kian Meng and Pei Jing have not produced any significant result, failing to get past the second round in their last five tournaments.
Currently ranked 14th in the world, Kian Meng and Pei Jing are no longer in contention for a spot in the season-ending World Tour Finals, set to take place in Hangzhou from December 11-15. – October 26, 2024
