KUALA LUMPUR – If the country needs my wife to represent the national team, then she will be there.

These were the words of national diver Nur Dhabitah Sabri’s husband, Mohammad Aizat Ahmad Nazri, when Scoop asked the three-time Olympian if her break was a sign of her retirement.

Dhabitah had earlier said that she would be taking a break after a disappointing campaign at the Paris Olympics, where she finished 12th in the 3-metre springboard final.

Dhabitah, who has dedicated her life to diving for the last decade, returned to Malaysia yesterday and has requested some time to rest. However, she has not indicated how long she will take a break from the national camp.

Mohammad Aizat, who is fondly known as Jiggy in the entertainment industry, affirmed that he will always support his wife’s career. However, the decision on whether she continues to compete ultimately rests with Dhabitah.

“As a husband, I see whether she (Dhabitah) is needed (by the national team) or not. We are also aware that there is a decision to be made on whether certain athletes will be able to compete in the Los Angeles 2028 Olympics. But it all depends on her management, and we all pray for the best,” Mohammad Aizat told Scoop.

In Tokyo 2020, Dhabitah came close to winning a medal before she settled for fourth place.

Her Olympic debut at Rio 2016, at the age of 17, saw her compete in two events: the 10-metre synchronised platform with Datuk Pandelela Rinong, where they finished ninth, and the 3-metre synchronised springboard with Cheong Jun Heong, where they secured fifth place in the final. – August 14, 2024
