KUALA LUMPUR – Malaysian Mohd Hafidz Abd Hamid claimed top spot in the men’s division, while Alicia Brittain of South Africa successfully defended her title in the women’s category of the specialised 140km L’Étape bicycle race held in Melaka on Sunday.
Drawing over 3,350 participants, including 90% from international and domestic backgrounds spanning 47 countries, L’Étape Melaka, part of the Tour de France series, solidified its status as the premier amateur cycling event on a global scale.
Marking its inaugural edition in Melaka and the third consecutive year in Malaysia, L’Étape Melaka, sanctioned by the Malaysian National Cycling Federation, provided cycling enthusiasts with a thrilling opportunity to experience the Tour de France’s adrenaline rush.
With 140km and 70km route options, both novices and seasoned riders were offered courses meticulously crafted by Tour de France experts to traverse the picturesque landscapes of Melaka, offering a blend of challenge and enjoyment.
In a display of sheer determination and skill, Hafidz – a former professional cyclist – outpaced his competitors, including defending champion Matthew Brittain, to secure victory in the men’s elite wave category, despite facing daunting hills characteristic of Melaka.
“There were moments I almost gave up, but I seized the opportunity to secure second place, pushing through until the final kilometre and giving it my all in the last sprint.
“The course was undeniably tough, with challenging hills, but with luck on my side and unwavering perseverance, I emerged victorious,” he said.
Meanwhile, Alicia, hailing from South Africa and currently based in Singapore, expressed her elation at clinching the women’s elite wave title, praising the race’s organisation, favourable weather conditions and impeccable route quality.
“I’m thrilled that everything went according to plan. The race was safe, and I was able to maintain my pace and secure the win.
“The course offered a delightful mix of flowy sections and thrilling descents, complemented by excellent road conditions and efficient route markings. It was a breeze to navigate,” she said.
Riduwan Matni, the group chief executive of Muse Group Asia, and co-organiser of the event alongside Element X, expressed delight at bringing L’Étape by Tour de France to Melaka for the first time, coinciding with Visit Melaka Year 2024.
“The overwhelming enthusiasm from both riders and spectators underscores the burgeoning cycling community in Asia.
