KUALA LUMPUR – Malaysia’s rugby 7s squad emerged as champions of the Southeast Asia 7s (SEA Sevens) tournament after defeating the host 14-10 at Singapore’s National Stadium today.

Nik Safuan Ismade Nik Man’s men opened the scoring in the third minute through a try by Muhammad Harith Iqbal Muhammad Anhar. Muhammad Azwan Zuwairi Mat Zizi scored the conversion for a 7-0 lead.

Singapore then scored a try of their own four minutes later but failed to add to the tally.

Ahmad Zulhilmi Azizad extended Malaysia’s lead through another try in the 10th minute, and Azwan again converted to give the team a 14-5 lead.

Singapore scored another try but that was the end of the scoring as the Bunga Raya 7s clinched its first-ever SEA 7s title.

“The players put in an outstanding performance to secure victory and even though we had limited time to prepare, their effort made up for it.

“I hope today’s victory can be a benchmark for Bunga Raya 7s to continue this form into our next competitions.

“Our next target is the Asian series, which will happen in September, and we are also still waiting to see if rugby will be part of the 2025 Thailand SEA Games programme,” said Nik Safuan in a video shared by Malaysia Rugby. – May 3, 2024
