KUALA LUMPUR – National men’s singles shuttler Ng Tze Yong will miss the Thailand Masters next week despite being back in training at the Akademi Badminton Malaysia (ABM) last week.

Tze Yong suffered a torn back muscle at the Malaysia Open during his first-round match against Japan’s Koki Watanabe.

The shuttler had gone up for a smash against Watanabe and immediately looked to be in discomfort. He asked for medical assistance but later decided to withdraw after the pain seemed to be too much to bear.

His coach, Datuk Tey Seu Bock, said that the 23-year-old will sit out the Thailand Masters and prepare for the Badminton Asia Team Championships (BATC) next month.

“We will try to prepare him for the BATC, and we hope he can recover in time for that,” said Seu Bock.

Seu Bock said that Tze Yong’s training regime is based on advice from the physio experts.

“Every morning, he will do rehab first for an hour and 30 minutes before we head to the court.

“His movement is still limited. The physiologists recommend that he can only do 70-80% speed smash, so we have to follow the routine,” said Seu Bock.

Meanwhile, Tze Yong was seen engaging in light practice with Seu Bock at ABM today and even jumped up for several half-speed smashes.

The Johorian lad said he has been back in training since last week doing light work but has not been involved in full training yet.

“When I was training just now, I didn’t feel any pain. We are not going full speed yet because I don’t know if I have fully recovered.

“Even when I smashed just now, it was not at 100% power. If I had my way, I would want to be fully fit right now. But I have to take it easy because I don’t want to get injured again,” said the world number 14. – January 23, 2024
