KUALA LUMPUR – Lee Zii Jia’s chase for a medal in the Hangzhou Asian Games came to an end as he fell short to India’s H.S. Prannoy in the quarters at the Binjiang Gymnasium today.
Despite making a comeback in the second set, the former All-England champion was unable to cope with the intense gameplay of his world number seven opponent, losing the game 16-21,23-21,20-22 in 78 minutes.
Prannoy is expected to play either Indonesia’s world number two-ranked Anthony Sinisuka Ginting or China’s world number eight-ranked Li Shifeng in tomorrow’s semifinals.
Meanwhile, in the mixed doubles category, Asian Games debutants Chen Tang Jie-Toh Ee Wei fought hard before succumbing to China’s Zheng Siwei-Huang Yaqiong in the quarterfinals.
The world number nine pair lost to the reigning world champions 14-21,21-23 in an exhilarating match that lasted for 44 minutes.
The world number one-ranked Chinese pair are expected to take on South Korea’s world number four-ranked Seo Seung-jae and Chae Yoo-jung in tomorrow’s semifinals. – October 5, 2023
