Number of flood evacuees reaches 152,000 with Pahang latest to be hit

Kelantan remains as worst-hit state at 96,743 people as of 8am today while Negri Sembilan and Selangor see slight improvement

KUALA LUMPUR – The floods hitting several states have worsened, with Pahang becoming the latest one on the list, raising the number of evacuees housed at temporary relief centres (PPS) to 152,377 this morning, compared to 146,611 last night. 

However, the situation in Negri Sembilan and Selangor seemed to be getting better as in the number of victims slightly decreased as of 8am today. 

Kelantan still remains as the worst-hit state as the number of flood victims in 284 PPS has reached 96,743 people from 29,928 families, compared to 93,158 last night.   

According to the Social Welfare Department’s (JKM) Disaster Info Portal, Pasir Mas continues to record the highest number of victims at 29,370, followed by Tumpat (17,680), Kota Bharu (14,154), Pasir Puteh (9,870), and Kuala Krai (6,614).   

Other affected areas include Bachok with 6,952 victims, Machang (6,098), Tanah Merah (5,318), Jeli (660), and Gua Musang (36).   

The Water Resources Department’s Flood Info Portal reported that five major rivers remain above dangerous levels, though receding slightly: Sg Kelantan at Kusial Baru (16.64m), Sg Kelantan at Kusial (16.66m), Sg Golok at Rantau Panjang (11.20m), Sg Golok at Tumpat (4.22m), and Sg Semerak at Pasir Puteh (3.65m).   

In Terengganu, the number of evacuees continues to rise, reaching 43,281 this morning compared to 41,409 reported last night. The victims from 11,679 families are sheltering in 305 PPS across all eight affected districts in the state.   

According to the State Disaster Management Committee Secretariat, Besut continues to record the highest number of victims at 16,084, followed by Hulu Terengganu (7,080), Dungun (6,470), Setiu (6,332), Kuala Terengganu (2,940), Kuala Nerus (2,307), Kemaman (1,230), and Marang (775).   

A review of the Flood Info Portal this morning at 8.15am found that 12 river-level monitoring stations – four in Hulu Terengganu, three in Dungun, two in Kuala Nerus, and one each in Kemaman, Marang, and Setiu – recorded dangerous water levels. 

In Kedah, the number of flood victims has risen to 8,754 from 2,671 families housed in 53 PPS as of 8 am, compared to 8,580 people from 2,622 families last night.   

Kedah Civil Defence Force deputy director Major (PA) Muhammad Suhaimi Mohd Zain stated that Kota Setar recorded 2,953 victims, Kubang Pasu (2,825), Padang Terap (1,082), Sik (1,075), Pokok Sena (604), Kuala Muda (182), and Baling (33).   

In Johr, the number of evacuees also increased to 592 this morning from 175 families, compared to 507 people last night.   

State Disaster Management Committee Chairman Tan Sri Azmi Rohani said Tangkak recorded 311 victims housed in three PPS, while Segamat had 281 victims in 11 PPS.   

He added that three rivers – Sg Tangkak at Kg Seri Ma’mor, Tangkak; Sg Kahang at Kg Contoh, Kluang; and Sg Sedili Kecil at Sedili Kecil, Kota Tinggi – were reported to be at dangerous levels.   

Meanwhile, Pahang became the latest state hit by floods, with 15 PPS opened in the Raub district, housing 452 victims from 146 families.   

The Raub District Disaster Management Committee Secretariat announced that the latest number of victims in PPS is being updated as flood registration operations are still underway.   

“The primary cause of floods in the district is the simultaneous occurrence of headwaters from Sg Dong and Sg Gali. At 10.51pm last night, the Raub APM received a public call reporting flooding in Kg Jelu, Kg Bukit Pampong, and Ulu Gali.   

“As a result, Raub APM relocated the victims to PPS, and follow-up actions and assistance are currently being coordinated by other agencies,” the statement said.   

In Melaka, the number of evacuees rose to 302 people from 71 families as of 8am, housed in five PPS.   

The State Disaster Management Committee Secretariat stated that Melaka Tengah recorded 111 victims, Alor Gajah (42), and Jasin (149).   

In Perlis, the number of evacuees rose to 226 people from 62 families this morning, compared to 224 people from 60 families last night.   

Perlis APM director Lt Col (PA) Mohd Izaimi Md Daud said that PPS SK Arau in Arau houses 83 people, while 143 others are at PPS Dewan Warisan in Kangar.   

“Flood-affected residents include those from Kg Rambai, Kg Banggol Sena, Kuala Tunggang, and Kg Alor Setar, as well as Kg Tok Kandang, Kg Repoh, Kg Teluk Kacang, Kg Bakau, and Kg Behor Gonchar,” he said in a statement.   

In Negri Sembilan, the JKM Disaster Info Portal reported that evacuees in the three affected districts – Tampin, Jempol, and Kuala Pilah – housed in 13 PPS, showed a decline to 1,925 people from 538 families this morning compared to 1,985 people from 569 families last night.   

In Selangor, the flood situation in Meru, Klang, showed a reduction in evacuees this morning to 102 people from 32 families, compared to 229 people last night, housed in PPS SK Sg Binjai. – Disember 1, 2024
