KUALA LUMPUR — Datin Nooryana Najwa Najib is now a director of the Malaysia External Trade Development Corporation (Matrade).
Her appointment was announced by Matrade chairman Datuk Seri Reezal Merican Naina Merican on Facebook following a board meeting yesterday where Nooryana was handed her appointment letter.
The Matrade website also lists her as a member of its board of directors.
The appointment of former prime minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak’s daughter went viral on social media through a post on an X account called @UMNONow which received over 50,000 views. The account is not the party’s official X account.
Educated at Georgetown University, Wharton, and the Harvard Kennedy School, Nooryana has become more active in Umno in recent times after father Najib began his prison sentence in August 2022 for corruption in the SRC International case.
She had also been embroiled in her own legal battle against the Inland Revenue Board (IRB) which sued her in 2019 to recover RM10.3 million in unpaid taxes.
However, in October 2022, IRB withdrew its appeal against a 2020 high court ruling to dismiss the statutory body’s application for a summary judgement against Nooryana to recover the sum.
Nooryana’s lawyer was reported saying that she had “settled her tax case” with IRB.
Besides her, two other new Matrade directors were also appointed yesterday, namely, Datuk Hairil Yahri Yaacob and Dr Mastura Abdul Karim. – October 16, 2024
