Taman Melawati landslide: residents of 20 houses told to evacuate

Incident happened around 11.40am, with videos showing uprooted trees, damaged vehicles caused by the natural disaster following heavy rain

KUALA LUMPUR – The residents of 20 houses at Jalan E6 in Taman Melawati, Ampang have been told to evacuate following a landslide in the area today.

Selangor Fire and Rescue Department operations assistant director Ahmad Mukhlis Mokhtar said that information regarding the incident will be updated from time to time.

He confirmed that police issued the evacuation order to those affected.

The landslide, caused by non-stop heavy rain in the area since early morning, was caught on several videos which went viral on social media, showing the disaster taking place near a residential area.

Strong water currents were also seen to be uprooting trees and damaging vehicles in the area.

According to an earlier statement from the Ampang Fire and Rescue Station, the incident occurred at 11.42am.

Operations commander Shamsul Shahar confirmed that the landslide involved a hillside covering an area of 20x20m, with the height of the collapse reaching 30m.

“The incident did not involve any victims or residential areas; however, there is still ongoing soil movement at the site,” he said in a statement today.

For now, authorities are closely monitoring the situation to prevent any further incidents. – October 15, 2024
