KUALA LUMPUR – The Transport Ministry has scrapped the requirement for MyJPJ app users to register for MyDigital ID by October 10, according to Transport Minister Anthony Loke.
Loke clarified that while a pop-up notification in the MyJPJ app had indicated the registration would be mandatory, the ministry had not made an official decision on the matter.
“I have ordered for the pop-up (on the MyJPJ app) to be taken down because there has been no official decision from the ministry (regarding the requirement),” the minister told a press conference at his ministry’s complex in Putrajaya today.
“While we support and are working towards integrating MyDigital ID with MyJPJ, such efforts must be done seamlessly as a packaged integration (in a way that) does not inconvenience MyJPJ users.”
Noting that such an integration process is likely to take some time, Loke assured that users of the Road Transport Department’s app can continue to use the platform as per usual in the meantime.
“It is hoped that this announcement will provide some peace to the public. There is no need to get riled up and worried,” he said, adding that he is aware of issues users have faced with the MyDigital ID app.
Loke also said that he has instructed the Road Transport Department to not give the public “too short” of a notice period when the integration process is eventually carried out. He did not disclose when the process is expected to commence.
Earlier today, the now-rescinded requirement courted much ire from the public, some of whom took to social media to express their frustrations after encountering repeated difficulties in completing the registration process for the MyDigital ID app.
Joining the chorus of disgruntled netizens, former Bangi MP Ong Kian Ming had also voiced his objection to the department’s move, describing it as a “really bad idea” as it compelled users to adopt the national digital identification system despite it not having been stress tested yet.
Highlighting an apparent lack of coordination in the rollout of MyDigital ID, the former deputy minister said the issue requires a comprehensive, all-of-government strategy involving various ministries and agencies.
“What we have now is a hodge-podge approach where Padu (central database hub) and Budi Madi (subsidy assistance system) registrations should have been done via MyDigital ID, but for various reasons, had separate registration systems,” he said in an X post.
He also suggested that MyDigital ID should fall under the Digital Ministry. The app is currently managed by Mimos Bhd, an agency under the Science, Technology and Innovation Ministry. – October 2, 2024
