KUALA LUMPUR – Perikatan Nasional (PN) has rejected a proposed memorandum of understanding (MoU) on opposition funding, arguing that it sets a dangerous precedent and undermines the principles of democracy.
PAS deputy president Datuk Seri Tuan Ibrahim Tuan Man said PN sees no need for the MoU, which he believes reflects a lack of respect for the people’s choice.
“It shows that the government doesn’t recognise the people’s mandate and instead requires an agreement for funding,” he said.
“This is not a step towards improving our democracy – it’s a step backwards.”
The Kubang Kerian MP argued that all elected representatives should receive funding without the need for an agreement, based on the constitution, laws, and regulations of Parliament, which all MPs have sworn to uphold.
“It’s shameful that the federal government is failing to provide funding to all MPs, while state governments, particularly those led by PAS, can do so without any agreements,” he said.
“Parliament and the federal government should be setting an example for the states, not the other way around.”
He urged the government to fulfil its manifesto promises made by Pakatan Harapan (PH), warning that failure to do so would confirm that the current government is dishonest.
PN chairman Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin announced yesterday that the coalition would not be submitting any new proposals regarding the MoU on opposition funding.
The Bersatu president reiterated their rejection of the MoU, which they believe contradicts the constitution and the inherent goodness of the Malaysian people.
Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof, who is also the unity government whip, had previously invited the opposition to submit new proposals or feedback on the draft MoU.
PN’s unanimous decision to reject the MoU was based on four key reasons: the terms contradict the Federal Constitution, they go against cultural, moral, and religious values, they could be misinterpreted and misused, and they restrict freedom. – September 21, 2024
