KUALA LUMPUR – The research on the status of Penang is pointless as the historical facts are well-known, Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow tells his Kedah counterpart.
“There is no need for you to go around the world to gather 20,000 documents about these well-known historical facts. We are not denying that Penang used to be a part of Kedah in the past.
“Please accept that Penang is an independent state and that its position is guaranteed by the Federal Constitution,” Chow was quoted as saying by Buletin Mutiara in an event last night in George Town.
This came after Kedah Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Muhammad Sanusi Md Nor said the research team formed by the state government would conclude its findings by year-end.
The team is collecting some 20,000 archives and historical agreements dating back to 1821.
“We want to establish Kedah and Penang’s status. From there, we will decide on our next course of action. We are not looking for free money,” he was reported as saying.
He added that Kedah is building a case on Penang’s status as a leased state when the British colonised the peninsula.
This is expected to escalate tensions between the two northern states as leaders have been arguing over historical facts and more recently, water rights – among others. – July 25, 2024
