KUALA LUMPUR – It is “natural” for Penang International Airport to have the same immigration autogate facility like the one at Kuala Lumpur International Airport, said state tourism executive councillor Wong Hon Wai.
“I have asked Home Minister (Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail) to study whether this (autogate) can be implemented in Penang.
“By automating the (checkout) system, it can speed up the (checkout) process and reduce the congestion (at the counters),” he told Scoop.
Wong’s comments came following the bottleneck at the immigration counters at the Penang airport recently.
It was reported that around 1,000 passengers were stuck at the airport’s immigration checkpoints as the counters were not fully manned.
Earlier, Wong said the queue stretched beyond the departure hall at one point.
The congestion was due to an increase in the number of international flight arrivals. – July 2, 2024
