KUALA LUMPUR – KK Supermart & Superstore Sdn Bhd founder and executive chairman Datuk Seri Dr Chai Kee Kan and his wife are set to know the Attorney-General’s Chambers’ (AGC) decision on charges related to socks bearing the word “Allah” on July 15, following their representation letter.

The sessions court will also hear the decision of the representation sent to the AGC by Xin Jian Chang Sdn Bhd, the Batu Pahat-based company that allegedly supplied the socks to KK Super Mart.

Deputy public prosecutor Khairul Azeem Mamat told judge Muhamad Anas Mahadzir today that all the accused have filed their letters, seeking to have their criminal charges withdrawn on May 17.

He confirmed that the AGC had received the documents on May 26.

However, he added that the AGC is still considering its decision and requested some time to decide. Subsequently, the judge then set the date for the AGC to inform the court of its decision.

Chai and his wife, Datin Seri Loh Siew Mui, were represented by counsels Datuk Rajpal Singh, Datuk David Gurupatham, Datuk RS Sodhi, and Datuk Theng Book at today’s proceedings.

Speaking to reporters after the proceeding, Sodhi said his clients had submitted the representation letter as they did not intend to insult Islam or its followers, and they neither ordered the “Allah”-printed socks nor had any knowledge of them.

Meanwhile, lawyer Lau Yi Leong represented Xin Jian Chang Sdn Bhd and its directors, Soh Chin Huat, Goh Li Huay, and Soh Hui San.

Scoop reported on April 29 that the judge has allowed for KK Mart and its directors’ criminal case to be tried together with Xi Jian Chang and its directors’ criminal case.

On March 26, Chai and Loh were charged under Section 298 of the Penal Code for intentionally hurting the religious sentiments of Muslims by displaying socks with the word “Allah” printed on them on the sales display rack at one of their convenience store outlets.

They were accused of committing the offence at one of their store’s branches in Sunway on March 13, around 6.30am.

Chai also faces a separate charge for the same offence and legal provision as the representative of KK Supermart & Superstore.

Meanwhile, Xi Jian Chang and its directors Chin Huat, Goh, and Hui San were also charged on March 26 with abetting KK Mart by intentionally hurting the religious feelings of Muslims by displaying these socks on its sales rack.

However, Chin Huat faces additional charges for similar offences as the company’s representatives.

All five accused and the two companies had pleaded not guilty to the charges and were released on RM10,000 bail, each. – June 10, 2024
