PUTRAJAYA – The Department of Labour Peninsular Malaysia has started an investigation into delays in the payment of salaries to staff of a private university in the federal capital.
The department, in a statement today, said the Cyberjaya Labour Office found that complaints received through the mass media and email on the matter have basis.
Cyberjaya labour will open an investigation paper under Section 19 of the Employment Act 1955, which is the offence of late payment of wages.
“The management of the university admits that it is currently facing a financial crisis which has caused delays in salaries for April and May involving 93 employees with a salary of RM4,800 and above.
“Of that number, 86 are local workers and seven are foreign workers,” according to the statement.
Accordingly, the investigating officer has issued a summons to the university management to appear at Cyberjaya labour to provide further information and submit complete documents.
For workers who complained and were located, they were asked to appear at the office to file a labour case as per the procedure required by the Employment Act 1955 to enable the labour officer to issue an order against the employer, according to the statement. – June 7, 2024
