KUALA LUMPUR – Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) is open to providing special consideration to admit students with disabilities to the Bachelor of Science in chemistry programme as long as it does not affect their theoretical and practical studies.
In response to criticism over the “special terms” for admission, the university said it would take into account student safety and welfare, which included risks of accidents or injuries in the laboratory.
“Cognitive and psychomotor skills are vital for students to excel in their practical studies (for the chemistry programme). Lab work also involves handling risky apparatus, dangerous gases, corrosive chemicals and so on,” it said in a statement today.
The university also issued an apology to an X user known as @bingbinge656, who was unhappy over the programme’s admission terms that singled out people with disabilities after getting an email response from UTM.
“Although I have autism, I still can learn and do things in chemistry. Why does the UTM requirements have to be like this?”
UTM’s phase two admission for foundation, certificate, diploma and degree programmes is taking place between April 29 and June 9. This is for admission to the 2024/2025 academic session. – May 15, 2024
