KUALA LUMPUR – The Labour Party claims victory in the London mayoral race with incumbent Sadiq Khan winning his third term in office, seeing off the Conservatives’ Susan Hall.
The 53-year-old is London’s first leader to secure three terms since the post was created in 2000.
According to London Elects, which manages the mayoral and London assembly elections, voter turnout was only 1.5% down from 2021, at 40.5%.
Sadiq is the son of Pakistani migrants and the first Muslim mayor of a Western capital when he was elected in 2016.
London, which is home to nine million people, is considered more multicultural and liberal than other UK cities.
The results came after more Labour victories in mayoral elections in the north of England – Steve Rotheram won Liverpool while Andy Burnham was re-elected in Greater Manchester and Tracy Brabin won a second term in West Yorkshire. – May 4, 2024
