KUALA LUMPUR – A DAP candidate will likely be fielded in the by-election for the Kuala Kubu Bharu seat, which was vacated following the death of incumbent Lee Kee Hiong yesterday, Selangor Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari said.
“It’s 70% yes (to DAP), unless there are other instructions,” he said after a Ramadan Madani event with state civil servants in Shah Alam today.
Amirudin, who is also Selangor Pakatan Harapan chairman, said the state government would be sending a notification of the seat’s vacancy to the legislative assembly speaker’s office after Lee’s funeral on Monday.
“After this, we have to prepare for a by-election to fill the vacant seat, but for that, we’ll have to wait for the announcement by the Election Commission,” Bernama quoted him as saying.
Lee died yesterday morning at the age of 53 after battling cancer for several years.
In the Selangor state election last year, Lee retained the seat for the third term after winning it for the first time in 2013.
For the time being, the Kuala Kubu Bharu seat will be the responsibility of Bandar Utama assemblyman Jamaliah Jamaluddin, who is also from DAP.
Jamaliah is also a state exco in charge of the Public Health and Environment Committee.
Amirudin said Jamaliah had been handling Kuala Kubu Bharu constituency issues since last month as Lee’s health worsened. – March 22, 2024
