KUALA LUMPUR – Hello Kitty indoor theme park Sanrio Puroland in Tokyo reopens today after receiving an email threatening terrorism yesterday.
The operator said on its website that it had to “temporarily close for the day because they are unable to guarantee the safety of visitors, performers and staff”.
“Today, Saturday, February 24, 2024, we received an email threatening terrorism. We also filed a report regarding this incident with the police.”
Following this, the operator said details on refunds and event rescheduling will be announced on March 8.
Affected visitors are advised to keep their tickets until then.
The threat resulted in the police scouring the park, which is known for its rides and shows featuring Hello Kitty and other Sanrio characters, for suspicious objects but none were found.
Public broadcaster NHK reported that the authorities are trying to identify the sender of the email.
The park was opened in Tama City, Tokyo in 1990. – February 25, 2024
