KUALA LUMPUR – The Bukit Aman Classified Crimes Investigation Unit will be spearheading investigations into DAP lawmaker Datuk Ngeh Koo Ham’s recent controversial statement regarding shariah laws.
This was confirmed by Kuantan district police chief Wan Mohd Zahari Wan Busu, who told Scoop that a total of 22 reports against Ngeh’s statement have been received so far.
“So far, we’ve received 22 reports, including the first one lodged here. Investigations are being conducted by the Bukit Aman Classified Crimes Investigation Unit,” Wan Zahari said when contacted today.
Earlier today, Perak police chief Datuk Seri Mohd Yusri Hassan Basri said all reports received on the issue were passed to the Kuantan police, as the first report on the matter was lodged there.
He added that an inquiry paper had been opened to look into the reports.
On December 28, Ngeh’s statement proposing the inclusion of a non-Muslim constitutional law expert and a representative from the Malaysian Bar in the special committee on shariah laws drew criticism from Malay leaders on both sides of the political divide.
Certain quarters, including the opposition coalition Perikatan Nasional (PN), accused him of provocation and undermining confidence in the Malay rulers, who are the custodians of Islam in their respective states.
Two days after issuing the proposal, Ngeh apologised and withdrew the suggestion, saying: “As it has now been clarified that the special committee formed by the National Islamic Affairs Council is headed by the sultan of Selangor – which I was not aware of – I hereby withdraw my proposal and tender my sincere apology.”
Yesterday, the Beruas MP’s home in Ayer Tawar, Perak, was made the target of a suspected arson attack, which saw the destruction of his Mercedes Benz and extensive damage to the rear and right sides of a Honda CRV, as well as the front part of a Toyota Hilux.
Police are actively investigating the case and have launched a manhunt for the suspect.
In a press conference following the incident, Ngeh claimed that his statement on shariah laws was distorted by the opposition, which fuelled hatred towards him, particularly within the Muslim community.
PN Youth today lodged a police report against Ngeh’s assertion, with its chief Ahmad Fadhli Shaari saying that the accusation was disrespectful and speculative as investigations were still ongoing. – January 11, 2024
