KUALA LUMPUR – A total of 51 police reports were lodged regarding the bomb hoax sent to dozens of schools last Tuesday.
Bukit Aman criminal investigation department director Datuk Seri Mohd Shuhaily Mohd Zain said although the hoax was sent almost simultaneously, some of the recipients only read it much later, which explains the increase in the number of police reports.
He added that a total of 10 investigation papers have been opened under Section 507 of the Penal Code, and Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998.
“As the inspector-general said earlier, this hoax has been perpetuated in Jamaica, and Trinidad and Tobago. But police are taking each of these threats seriously because we don’t want anyone to take the opportunity to disrupt the peace of this country.
“Police will visit every school that received the threat to ensure that there is no element of sabotage or people who want to take advantage,” he said at a press conference at Bukit Aman here today.
He said the highest number of reports were received in Selangor (18), followed by Kuala Lumpur (7), Johor (6), Sarawak (5), Penang (4), Negri Sembilan, and three each in Perak and Kedah while Sabah has two.
He added that the schools in question became “targets” because their email addresses are in the public domain.
Police have also asked for assistance from the US Federal Bureau of Investigation and Interpol in this investigation.
“We need to talk to them to find out the cause of what happened in those countries. For now we have not yet been able to identify the perpetrator.”
Shuhaily said prior to this his team received many reports of fake bomb threats, but could not identify the perpetrators.
“Bomb threats are not only made to schools, but also hotels, hospitals and premises owned by foreigners.”
Previously, police received dozens of reports about fake bomb threats that were sent via email to several private and government schools across the country.
The threat was sent via two email accounts using the name “taktstorer”, which means troublemaker in German, from email service provider beeble.com. – November 24, 2023
