KUALA LUMPUR – The management team of Mid Valley Southkey, a shopping mall in Johor Bahru, and St. Giles Hotel Southkey have confirmed that they received a report of a security threat earlier today.
In a statement, the management team said that they received an anonymous phone call alerting them of the threat.
“The relevant authorities, including the police and the Fire and Rescue Department, were immediately informed of the threat. We can confirm that investigations are currently ongoing, and we are assisting them.
“We were instructed by the authorities to evacuate the affected areas as a proactive measure.
“The management assisted in the smooth evacuation of the mall and hotel,” the statement read.
It is understood that the authorities are still inside the shopping mall, investigating the incident, and a press conference will be held at an undetermined time.
Earlier today, shoppers and employees at the mall were instructed by the management and security personnel to immediately evacuate the premises and gather at its open-air parking space after an emergency alarm rang at about 6.40pm.
Meanwhile, the Singapore Consulate-General in Johor Bahru also called on Singaporeans to be cautious, while adhering to Malaysian authorities’ instructions and staying updated on local news. – October 14, 2023
