PONGAL is a harvest festival celebrated by Tamil communities worldwide, marking a time of gratitude to the sun god, Surya, for the abundant harvest and prosperity bestowed upon the land.
The highlight of the festival, which falls in the auspicious Tamil month of Thai, is the preparation of the traditional dish also named Pongal – a delectable concoction of newly harvested rice, lentils and jaggery, symbolising the essence of fertility and growth.
Families gather to partake in this communal cooking ritual, creating an atmosphere of togetherness and joy.
