GEORGE TOWN – Christmas celebrations would feel incomplete without festive decorations adorning public spaces and commercial establishments such as office complexes, shopping malls, and hotels.
In Penang, it’s common to see shopping malls like Queensbay Mall and Gurney Paragon showcasing large, eye-catching Christmas displays at their entrances.
These installations often go viral on social media, attracting thousands of visitors to the malls.
Behind these vibrant displays are event management companies working hard to maintain the festive spirit, despite the increasing costs of materials that have affected businesses across various sectors.
One such company is Penang E-Village, led by director Bonny Ng. With eight years of experience in the industry, Ng is committed to spreading joy through his company’s decorations, despite the cost challenges.
Ng explained to Scoop that the prices of Christmas ornaments and artificial trees have risen significantly, with a 10% increase in prices for these essential items.
“For example, a 3-foot Christmas tree used to cost between RM70 and RM120, but now it’s priced between RM90 and RM150,” he said.
Penang E-Village sources its decorations mainly through online platforms like Shopee and Taobao, importing goods from China.
Although the rising costs have posed challenges, Ng’s company continues to thrive thanks to sustained demand for decorations from malls and other commercial properties.
“We need to be creative in our services by renting out our decorations for a set period. After the festive season ends, we collect and store the items to reuse them the following year,” Ng explained.
Beyond the demand for his services, Ng shared that the joy his team brings to customers and the public is a major motivator.
“We (Penang E-Village) still believe our purpose as an event company is not just to make money, but to bring joy, fun, and happiness to the world. Seeing the joy and happiness on people’s faces is what motivates us to keep going,” he said. – December 25, 2024
