KUALA LUMPUR – U Mobile Sdn Bhd was chosen as the second 5G network operator in Malaysia based on several factors, including their business and technical plans, complaint and customer satisfaction records, and performance in implementing other infrastructure initiatives.
In a statement today, the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) said that these factors include their significant contributions to the Universal Service Provision (USP) projects, such as JENDELA Phase 1 and the 4G Upgrading Project, aligning with MCMC’s commitment to enhance user experience and service excellence.
“With this selection, regulatory responsibility for U Mobile can be enforced according to established compliance measures. Penalties will be imposed for any non-compliance.
“U Mobile Sdn Bhd is permitted to collaborate with other ecosystem partners subject to MCMC approval. MCMC will continuously assess these collaborations to ensure Malaysians benefit from them,” the statement read.
Regarding the current foreign shareholding in U Mobile Sdn Bhd, MCMC acknowledged its existence and said that it is the responsibility of the licence holder to inform them of any changes in foreign shareholding.
On November 1, MCMC announced that U Mobile Sdn Bhd would be responsible for implementing Malaysia’s second 5G network.
Meanwhile, MCMC stated that the establishment of this second 5G network paves the way for more comprehensive service flexibility and inclusivity in the future.
This development, MCMC said, will foster competition and strengthen industry resilience, allowing Malaysians to enjoy high-speed connectivity at affordable prices.
“MCMC will continue to monitor quality standards among all service providers to ensure a robust and reliable telecommunications landscape for the future of the nation.
The Commission also stated that a rigorous selection process was undertaken to ensure that the second 5G network in Malaysia meets the highest standards in terms of quality, reliability, and accessibility.
It highlighted the provider’s ability to offer diverse 5G services, enabling Malaysians to enjoy high-speed connectivity at affordable prices. – November 6, 2024
