KUALA LUMPUR – The younger brother of murdered 6-year-old Zayn Rayyan Abdul Matiin will be placed in the care of the Selangor Social Welfare Department for two months while his parents await trial.
This comes after the Shah Alam magistrates’ court awarded the department temporary custody today under Section 25(2) of the Child Act 2001.
The boy will be placed in a welfare institution while the department completes the assessment report, said department director Azmir Kassim.
“The report will be used by the department to determine if the guardian is fit to be awarded custody of the child,” he was quoted as saying by Harian Metro.
Yesterday, it was reported that the boy was taken to a hospital for a check-up and placed under the care of the department.
Yesterday, Zayn Rayyan’s father, Zaim Ikhwan Zahari, and mother, Ismanira Abdul Manaf, were jointly charged in the sessions court here with child neglect.
Both parents pleaded not guilty to the charge framed under Section 31(1)(a) of the Child Act 2001 and read with Section 34 of the Penal Code.
On December 6, last year, the boy’s body was found at a stream near Idaman Apartments, Damansara Damai, some 200m from his house.
A post-mortem indicated that the child was killed, based on injuries found on his neck and body.
Zayn Rayyan’s grandparents were also arrested but were released on bail the next day. – June 14, 2024
