PETALING JAYA – The unexpected arrest of Zayn Rayyan’s parents has stunned both the couple and potentially many Malaysians, said their lawyer Mahmud Abdul Jumaat.

Speaking to the press at the courthouse here today, Mahmud expressed his own surprise at the arrest.

“Of course, they (Zayn’s parents) are very shocked. They are his parents and this is truly unexpected,” Mahmud said.

“I believe Malaysians are also shocked by this arrest. I plead to netizens to refrain from speculation and to pray for the family’s strength during this ordeal.”

Mahmud confirmed that magistrate Azura Mohd Saad approved the police’s application for a week-long remand this morning, saying that the parents are being held to assist with the investigation under Section 302 of the Penal Code.

New developments in the investigation, including the discovery of new evidence and previously recorded statements from the couple led to their arrest, Mahmud added.

Previously, Scoop reported that Zayn’s parents were arrested around 11am on Friday at their home in Puncak Alam, Selangor.

Zayn, 6, was reported missing on December 5 last year. He was found dead near a stream about 200m from his apartment block at the Idaman Apartments, Damansara Damai, the next day.

The autopsy revealed injuries consistent with self-defence, leading to an investigation under Section 302 of the Penal Code.

In February, Bukit Aman Criminal Investigation Department director Datuk Seri Mohd Shuhaily Mohd Zain affirmed that the investigation into Zayn’s death had never been halted. – June 1, 2024
