KUALA LUMPUR – A sixth person has been arrested over the petrol bomb attack at an entertainment centre in Jalan Yap Kwan Seng, here, last week, while police say the motive was likely a business misunderstanding.

The capital’s police chief, Datuk Rusdi Mohd Isa, said investigations so far had found that there had been a disagreement between businessmen prior to the attack, and it did not involve any elements of secret societies.

“This is an isolated case, a mere misunderstanding between businessmen. Some of them do the planning, some of them hire (someone), some of them throw (the petrol bomb),” Utusan Malaysia reported him saying after attending the monthly meeting of the Kuala Lumpur police contingent headquarters.

Police also arrested another suspect last night, making it a total of six people detained over the case to date.

The latest suspect will be remanded today.

“There are now six and two more are still at large. There are two or three more individuals who will be arrested,” Rusdi added.

All those arrested had specific roles in the incident, and some of them also had past criminal records.

The case is being investigated under Section 435 of the Penal Code for committing mischief by fire and Section 506 for criminal intimidation.

CCTV camera footage of the incident – showing men parking their motorcycles on the side of the road outside the nightclub prior to hurling an object at the premises – had gone viral on social media.

They fled the scene, while members of the public were later recorded helping to extinguish the fire.

Rusdi previously said police had recorded statements from the premises owner and the entertainment centre’s manager to assist in the investigation. – May 15, 2024
