KUALA LUMPUR – The Malaysia Hockey Confederation (MHC) is teaming up with QNET Group to create more diversity in the local hockey scene by establishing a tournament to be played among Tamil schools in the country.
The tournament is scheduled to take place from February 14 to 15 and will involve approximately 50 schools across Malaysia.
MHC president Datuk Seri Subahan Kamal said that player selection for the national team setup is done based on merit, but he wishes to see more diversity in the national team in the years to come.
“To be frank, we don’t have many Tamil players like we did back in the day, and this initiative will be good so that we can be more inclusive by giving Tamil players a platform to perform.
“I have been to several Tamil schools across the country, and I was impressed with the teachers’ commitment as they were working hard to elevate the Tamil community through the sport.
“This tournament began in Johor Bahru last year, and I watched the games at the Taman Daya Hockey Stadium, where I could see a lot of potential from the young Tamil players in the tournament.
“We discussed with the organisers about having the tournament at the Bukit Jalil National Hockey Stadium this year because I want the players to experience playing in a world-class stadium.
“We are also planning to come up with the same approach, especially with the Punjabi and other communities as well.
“Hence, we are hoping that they can approach us, and we will organise a tournament for them as well so that they can be included in the national team setup,” Subahan said during a press conference at the National Hockey Stadium today.
QNET Group, formerly known as QuestNet and GoldQuest, is a Hong Kong-based multi-level marketing (MLM) company.
The group was founded in 1998 by Datuk Seri Vijay Eswaran and Joseph Bismark.
The company’s products include energy, weight management, nutrition, personal care, home care, and fashion accessories on an e-commerce platform.
The group was also involved in the establishment of Petaling Jaya City FC, which played in the Malaysia Super League between 2019 and 2022, when the football club was known as the Malaysian Indian Football Association.
Last year’s edition of the Tamil school tournament saw SJK (T) Jalan Khalidi bringing home RM1,000 and the championship trophy by winning the final, held at the Taman Daya hockey stadium.
A total of 522 students representing 27 teams from 19 Tamil schools took part in the competition. – February 7, 2024
