KUALA LUMPUR – Fresh from his return after watching his favourite team Harimau Malaya fight to a nail-biting 3-3 draw with South Korea, superfan Derrick Gan seems to have lined up a surprise for fellow football fans.
The surprise has something to do with the new motorcycle by Modenas upon his arrival at Kuala Lumpur International Airport yesterday, which was arranged by local private radio station ERA, he said when contacted today.
“I am very touched and did not expect the surprise (the new motorcycle) and that they would send it to KLIA,” he said.
Derrick, however, was tight-lipped about what exactly the surprise was and his future plans for his new motorcycle, merely saying that he would “make an announcement regarding it soon”.
For now, his focus is on whether or not he would fly to Oman to cheer his favourite team on from the stands during their third 2026 World Cup/2027 Asian Cup qualifying match on March 21.
“I’m given to understand that travelling to Oman is expensive but I’ll definitely go to watch our team playing against them in the reverse fixture at the Bukit Jalil National Stadium on March 26,” he added.
Derrick became an overnight sensation when news about how he was willing to sell his motorcycle to finance his trip to watch Harimau Malaya in action at the Asian Cup in Doha went viral.
Photos of him crying in happiness during the sensational 3-3 draw also went viral among local fans and netizens, who then gave him the Malay nickname “abang rambut perang” and his dedication as a superfan is widely admired by fellow Malaysians.
Derrick did reveal last Friday that he received RM4,500 from the sale of his motorcycle, which he had advertised for sale on Facebook in December last year. – January 28, 2024
