KUALA LUMPUR – Two people died and three others are still buried under the rubble after a landslide hit Blue Valley, Cameron Highlands, just before 3am today.
The emergency team has already found the remains of two victims, while three others are still unaccounted for. Police have been able to confirmed their identities this afternoon.
The Pahang Fire and Rescue Department said the victims are believed to be two of five Myanmar nationals staying in a house that was buried by the landslide.
The remains of the first victim were recovered from the landslide at 11.05am and handed over to the police, said Pahang Bomba deputy operations director Ismail Abdul Ghani.
While the rescue efforts are ongoing, the affected area is too dangerous for media personnel to enter.
The search-and-rescue team is still looking for the other four victims – three men and one woman – who are said to share the house.
An emergency call was placed at 2.51am that a landslide hit Ulu Sg Palas and an initial team was deployed from the Cameron Highlands station, where they had to walk 3km to the site due to the debris and terrain.
The rescue efforts are assisted by the Special Tactical Operation and Rescue Team, the K9 Unit, the Civil Defence and firefighters from Perak, Selangor and Kuala Lumpur.
Last week, a landslide hit Jalan Boh in Cameron Highlands, making the road impassable in both directions.
The Pahang Public Works Department said Section 0.70 of the road that connects Habu town to the Boh Tea Estate will be closed until February 2 to remove mud and make road repairs.
There is also no alternative road, as Jalan Boh is the only tarred road that branches off from Jalan Tapah-Cameron Highlands (Federal Route 59), leading to the Boh Tea Estate in Habu. Jalan Boh also serves as the only access for several farms located in that area. – January 26, 2024
