With exactly two weeks remaining, Al-Sultan Abdullah will conclude his tenure as the nation’s 16th Agong on January 30.
His majesty will be succeeded by Sultan of Johor Sultan Ibrahim Sultan Iskandar, who has been elected as the 17th Yang di-Pertuan Agong for a five-year term, effective January 31, 2024.
The election was held at the Special 263rd Meeting of the Conference of Rulers at Istana Negara last year.
The Malay rulers also elected Sultan of Perak Sultan Nazrin Muizzuddin Shah as deputy Yang di-Pertuan Agong for the same term.
Al-Sultan Abdullah is a popular king among Malaysians who is known for his caring nature.
It was reported that he had stopped his motorcade to help road accident victims on more than two occasions in the past.
Known for his hands-on approach, the king stepped out of his palace to personally meet and address the media following the 2022 general election, awaiting a decision on the hung parliament faced then.
In addition, he had also distributed meals himself to members of the media who had been camping outside his official residence.
During his reign, Al-Sultan Abdullah has accomplished several notable feats, among them:

He has overseen the implementation of the movement control order during the pandemic, which has helped to contain the spread of the virus.
