KUALA LUMPUR – Police have confirmed the case of a 41-year-old Malaysian drug kingpin who was arrested in Laos, and is working with authorities in that country as well as Thailand to topple the illegal ring.
In a statement today, Bukit Aman Narcotics Crime Investigation Department (NCID) director Datuk Seri Mohd Kamarudin Md Din said the man was arrested on December 28, 2023, in Vientiane, Laos, after failing to possess valid travel documents under Laos’ Immigration Act.
He said that Thailand’s Office of the Narcotics Control Board (ONCB) proposed to the Laos police to deport the suspect to Thailand, as he has been blacklisted under the Thai Narcotics Act.
“The suspect is a 41-year-old local man, married and from Parit Buntar, Perak. He is believed to be connected with a drug syndicate network in Malaysia,” he said in a statement today.
Kamarudin said the police are now cooperating with the ONCB and Laotian police for further investigations into the case.
Yesterday, the ONCB announced the arrest of a local drug dealer, who is also a key member of a cross-border syndicate, in a joint operation between Thailand and Laos.
The 39-year-old suspect was arrested in Laos on December 29, 2023, while the warrant for his arrest had been issued by the Crime Court in August of the same year.
According to The Bangkok Post, he was on a list of wanted people with a bounty of 1 million baht. – January 2, 2024
