KUALA LUMPUR – The Tunku Abdul Rahman College (TARC) Education Foundation has no objection to allowing residents to stay in Kg Setia Jaya, Setapak, until their relocation is sorted out.

Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Federal Territories) Dr Zaliha Mustafa said this following a discussion with TARC Education Foundation representatives, adding that she felt positive, indicating a constructive outcome towards finding a solution.

The Kuala Lumpur High Court had ordered villagers in Kg Setia Jaya to vacate their houses earlier this month and gave them 18 months to do so after finding that TARC Education Foundation was the legal owner of the land on which the village stands.

Following the decision, residents there also claimed they were being evicted unjustly and not compensated fairly.

“Based on the outcome of the discussion, the TARC Education Foundation, in principle, has no objection to allowing residents to continue staying in Kg Setia Jaya until their relocation is settled.

“The discussion also focused on the best possible solution to provide the residents with replacement housing, which will be discussed in further detail. Follow-up discussions will be held to ensure this issue, which has been postponed for 30 years, can be resolved as soon as possible,” she said in a statement posted on X (formerly known as Twitter).

It was reported that about 500 residents at the village are affected by the court order after the landowner, which is a higher education institution, used legal channels to obtain the directive for the villagers to evict the land within 18 months.

She said the meeting was also attended by Wangsa Maju MP Zahir Hassan and the prime minister’s political secretary, Azman Abidin. – December 28, 2023
