KUALA LUMPUR – Ceiling prices have been imposed on 14 items, including imported bone-in lamb, pork, poultry and selected vegetables, as part of the Christmas 2023 price-control scheme between December 23 and 27.
Other items include tomato, green peppers, round cabbage imported from China and Indonesia, carrots, potatoes from China, imported red and yellow onions, red chillies, live old chicken (Sarawak only), chicken wings (Sabah, Sarawak, Labuan), live pigs (wholesale price in West Malaysia), pig stomach (West Malaysia), pork, and lard (West Malaysia).
Domestic Trade and Cost of Living Minister Datuk Armizan Mohd Ali said enforcement personnel will be deployed to monitor the prices of goods at markets and retail outlets nationwide.
“Stern action, including penalties, will be taken against traders who fail to comply with the regulations under this scheme,” he said in a statement today.
According to the Price Control and Anti-Profiteering Act 2011, errant traders are liable to fines of up to RM100,000, three years imprisonment, or both, while companies could face fines of up to RM500,000 for failing to comply.
Traders are required to affix pink coloured labels indicating the price per unit or per unit weight, the description of the goods, and the grade or quality, if any, of such price-controlled goods.
They are not allowed to sell such goods above the determined ceiling price and must ensure an adequate supply of price-controlled goods. – December 21, 2023
