KUALA LUMPUR – The Social Security Organisation (Socso) has begun an internal forensic investigation into the hacking of its website and the subsequent data breach.
CEO Datuk Seri Dr Mohammed Azman Aziz Mohammed said the probe will also look into allegations that certain parties were behind the cyberattack that occurred earlier this month.
“If the forensic investigation uncovers elements of commercial crime, a police report will be lodged,” Mohammed Azman said in a statement today.
Socso met with officers from the National Security Council (MKN) and the National Cyber Security Agency (Nacsa) yesterday, following news of the hacking and data breach, which was announced on December 8.
The data breach, which involved names, addresses, payment methods, and mobile numbers, first came to light after a BreachForums user posted about it on December 5.
Socso then confirmed that the cyberattack occurred on December 2.
Mohammed Azman today said the cyberattacks that day began at around 7pm, and Socso had responded swiftly to contain them.
Socso’s discussions with MKN and Nacsa also refined the steps to be taken in dealing with cyberattacks, and follow-up actions will continue to be implemented in close cooperation with these authorities, he added.
He assured that Socso will continue to ensure that the welfare of its 573,00 registered beneficiaries is protected, and will bring the mastermind behind the cyberattacks to justice. – December 10, 2023
