KUALA LUMPUR – A woman was killed during the magnitude-7.4 quake in southern Philippines last night in the Surigao Del Sur and Davao Oriental provinces, triggering evacuations and tsunami alerts.
She was fleeing her home in Tagum city with her family when a wall collapsed.
Although the tsunami threat has passed, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology advised people in threatened communities to heed instructions from local authorities.
More than 600 aftershocks were recorded while residents returned home. Strong aftershocks with magnitudes of 6.4, 6.2, 6.1 and 6.0 continue to rock southern Philippines early this morning.
The Philippine Coast Guard is also on alert for potential dispatch.
It was a traumatic night for tens of thousands of residents in northeast Mindanao who fled their houses and even from a hospital when the quake struck. – December 3, 2023
