KUALA LUMPUR – American hardcore punk band Sunami, who was set to perform the Malaysia leg of its Southeast Asia tour yesterday, saw a cancellation at the eleventh hour.

Blacklisted Productions, a Southeast Asia-based promoter, expressed its regret over how unspecified issues with authorities had led to the cancellation a mere hour before the concert.

It added that Research Verify Develop Activity Records (RVDA), a Kuala Lumpur-based record label and event organiser behind Sunami’s concert, will contact concertgoers to facilitate refunds.

“Malaysia, we regret to inform you that we have to cancel the Kuala Lumpur show for Sunami due to unforeseen circumstances with the local authorities.

“Refund information and procedures for the show will be sent out by RVDA within the coming weeks,” it said in a post on Twitter yesterday.

Nonetheless, Sunami’s four members, who were supposed to perform at RVDA Artspace in Seri Kembangan, met with fans here yesterday evening, as depicted in a post on the band’s official Twitter page.

Besides apologising for the cancellation, the group criticised the authorities while promising to return to Malaysia.

The band’s performances in Jakarta (September 29), Singapore (September 30), and Bangkok (October 1), are expected to proceed as scheduled.

Scoop has reached out to Sunami, Blacklisted Productions, and RVDA, but has yet to receive responses as of press time.

Previously, RVDA and Blacklisted Productions faced cancellations when attempting to bring American pop punk supergroup No Pressure to Kuala Lumpur.

It was reported then that the concert was dropped due to “circumstances that would affect the whole tour”.

Other bands and performers have also skipped or cancelled the Malaysia leg of their tours for various reasons. – September 29, 2023
